Nyack College's founder is recognized as one of the foremost

figures in the American missionary movement. Dr. A.B. Simpson

resigned a prestigious New York City pastorate in order to develop

an interdenominational fellowship devoted to serving unreached

people. Simpson's view was shared by a wide group of men and women, including mainline church leaders, laborers, & theological

scholars. This ever-growing alliance was bound together by

a desire to inspire the church to fulfill its Great Commission of

world evangelization.

The Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers (CFAMC) seeks to glorify the

Lord Jesus Christ and help build His kingdom by encouraging the work and

witness of Christian composers of symphonic and chamber music, opera, and

other concert works. We pray that believers will embrace our musical integrity

because of our Christian witness, and that our commitment to musical excellence

will allow us to bring our Christian witness to the wider art music world. Located

throughout the United States and abroad, CFAMC members are professional and

academic composers (faculty and students), avocational composers, church

musicians interested in art music, and other individuals who support the CFAMC

mission and want to be involved in our activities. Among these, CFAMC is pleased

include a number of Honorary Members, including composer James MacMillan

and musician/theologian Jeremy Begbie.

CFAMC was founded under the leadership Mark Hijleh in 1994 Mark had a vision of starting an organization

of committed Christian art composers for some time. It’s first conference took place in 1995. Members are

from all Christian denominations. Composers are not required to affirm any particular statement of Christian

doctrine for membership, but the CFAMC official statement of doctrine consists of the historic Apostles

Creed. It holds a national conference every two years at Indiana Wesleyan University coordinated by Mark

Wooldridge. Regional conferences are held on alternating years when possible. Since CFAMC members are

scattered across the United States and other countries, it’s list serve http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cfamc/

and Facebook page are the primary ways of communicating and sharing with each other. A monthly listening

page featuring the work of a member composer, and a monthly Devotion Page are both offered there.

Participation in these two media formats are open to anyone.  For further information about CFAMC, Visit it’s

website at http://www.cfamc.org/

Our 2011 Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers Regional Conference took place at Nyack College on Saturday

November 5, 2011. We are grateful to Nyack College and it’s Music School for hosting this conference. We heard 28

compositions, including world premieres, by 18 composer members. The Nyack staff, students, and friends performed their

music admirably. We were privileged to have Dr. Tom Jennings, music director of Redeemer Presbyterian in NYC,

present our keynote address. Hymn-poet Richard Leach read his poetry and offered his insights, with a hymn- sing

of new settings by our composers of his work. Visual Artist Paul Kiler presented his talk “Visio Divina”, also with

musical “settings” of some of his works by our composers. The following is an archive of much of the day’s activities,

recorded by Eduardo Duque. Click here for a pdf of the conference program booklet.

the first Bible college in North America. This school was the forerunner of Nyack College. Thus, from its start

in New York City in 1882, Nyack College is devoted to the concept of education as preparation for service.

Today Nyack College, a fully accredited liberal arts college, continues to fulfill the vision of its founder. Located

twenty miles north of New York City, it is an educational institution rooted in the historic Christian faith, serving

The Christian and Missionary Alliance, the church, the community and the world. Nyack College seeks to

produce broadly educated persons who are prepared for advanced study, careers, and civic responsibility.

It is committed to promoting Christian knowledge, moral maturity, and spiritual development in its students,

and to preparing them for lives of ministry and service. To achieve this the college offers traditional and non-

traditional undergraduate programs to a co-educational, ethnically diverse student body.

The School of Music at Nyack College is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of

Schools of Music, and its various degree programs are founded on the study of classical music from its

earliest beginnings to its most contemporary forms. Music for worship is also woven through the curriculum

since most of our students and alumni are active in ministries involving music. There are also opportunities

to be part of contemporary worship through student-led vocal and instrumental groups on campus.
